Israel

Israel
Siouxsie and the Banshees

Little orphans in the snow
With nowhere to call a home
Start their singing
Waiting through the summertime
To thaw your hearts in wintertime
That's why they're singing...
Waiting for a sign to turn blood into wine
The sweet taste in your mouth--turned bitter in its glass

Israel...in Israel
Israel...in Israel

Shattered fragments of the past
Meet in veins on the stained glass
Like the lifeline in your palm
Red and green reflects the scene
Of a long forgotten dream
There were princes and there were kings
Now hidden in disguise--cheap wrappings of lies
Keep your heart alive with a song from inside
Even though we're all alone
We are never on our own when we're singing
There's a man who's looking in
And he smiles a toothless grin
Because he's singing...
See some people shine with glee
But their song is jealousy
Their hate is clanging--maddening
In Israel...will they sing Happy Noel

Israel...in Israel
Israel...in Israel

In Israel will they sing Happy Noel

These are nice lyrics Shmoop.

Now I have my fave hymn from school going round in me head "Oh come, oh come Emmanuel". Used to love that one.

Pro-Palestinian is the way I read it if I stop to think about it.

Really? I don't at all. I'll post another Banshees song.

The song Israel talks of the reunion in Israel and how the Jews have kept their spirit alive. It also speaks of the envy that others have for them.

What the Jews carry is hidden and incomprehensible to many people. Especially as so many lies have been told about them as a people.

You see I read it as "Little orphans in the snow with nowhere to call a home" in Palestine whereas , in Israel, they're all having a Happy Noel.

So, Palestinians would be singing a happy noel in Israel? That doesn't quite fit, does it?

And wouldn't it be "In Palestine" and not "In Israel"? Israel is Jewish.

You know this, methinks.

Merlin, if you disagree with what the lyrics are saying then so be it. But honestly, I don't think anyone is currently having a happy noel over there.

Do you really think the Israelis are having a happy noel?

Obviously I realise that Israel is Jewish (my Geography will stretch that far).

I think the key to the lyrics - if there is one - is the line "their song is jealousy, their hate is clanging-maddening".

Who is she talking about here ?

And why did Zeek suspect the song is pro-Palestinian in the first place ?

I think we should be told.

The song is pro-Israel

"Having already flirted with fascistic iconography during the punk era by daubing swastikas all over the place, Siouxsie - the good catholic girl that she is, made amends by writing the hyper ballad 'Israel' with the Banshees - was not going to compromise her new liberal credibility by dancing in a union jack bikini with a bulldog in her arms, and Morrissey moping about in St. George's flag outside the Houses of Parliament."
